Simple Steps to Fixing a Leaky Hose

When you discover that your hose is not working properly, one of the first things that you should do is to check and make sure that there are no large holes in the hose. If you discover one, then your search is probably over and your have found the problem. Often, however, holes are small and hard to spot in a garden hose, especially a multicolored one. Here are some simple steps to help repair a garden hose that has acquired a hole.

Step One
The best way to find a hole in your hose is to turn the water on and see if you can spot it that way. If you still can't find the hole, then attach a gun like nozzle to the end of the hose and begin spraying. The added water pressure will probably force water to spray out of the hole in your hose, helping you to easily spot it.

Step Two
Once you have found the source of your problem, then be sure to mark where the hole is located. It is a smart practice to use a black permanent marker so the marking will not come off or rub off in the water. Another option is to use black tape, like electrical tape, which will not fall off when wet.

Step Three
Once you've found the problem and located the hole, your next step should be a quick jaunt to the local hardware store. Here you can purchase a garden hose repair kit for a relatively low price. The kit will contain a mender or couplings that will allow you to easily fix the hole.

Step Four
Once you've arrived home take out your garden shears or some hardy scissors and spread the hose out in front of you. Then cut the hose on either side of the hole, making sure that the cut is straight. Cutting the hose straight and not at a diagonal will make it easier to fit the pieces into the couplings or mender.

Step Five
While getting all of your supplies in order it is smart to let the end pieces of the hose soak in hot, soapy water. This will let the fibers relax and soften, making the ends easier to put in the mender.Step Six
It is finally time to set the hose pieces in the mender or couplings. If your kit came with a mender, simply place the ends in the plastic openings and clamp. If your kit has couplings, then attach them to each end of the hose and then screw the two ends together. Your hose should be fixed and working good as new!
